I am Acting Chief Sergeant of the Police Force, in which I have served for six years; I was formerly in the Metropolitan Police for three years in the 'G' and 'Y' divisions.
On the 15th March I was on patrol and I met Brearly who - with several others - was finishing his duty for the evening; he spoke about the Medical Examination, saying that he and the other men wished to be excused; I advised him to make out an application, together with his comrades, and to forward it to the Captain Superintendent for consideration. I further said that if he wished to give the application more weight he could ask the older men in the Place to sign it as well.
I heard nothing more about the matter until the new men arrived.
I refused to attend on the 27th March.

I am a Sergeant of the Hong Kong Police and act as Barrack Sergeant. I have been in the Force for about one year and three months. Previous to this I served in the Leith Police Force for three years.
I went off to the S.S. Ajax on its arrival on the 10th March to superintend the landing of the contingent from London to join Brearly and others who came out with this Force. I saw Brearly at this time and he asked me if it was true that we had a Medical Inspection monthly. I said: We have! The men made a remark to his comrades to the effect that we were brought out here to be treated worse than prostitutes!
